Do Mouse Repellents Actually Work?
Peppermint oil, ultrasonic plug-ins, ammonia, predator urine: the evidence behind the most popular mouse repellents, and the two things that actually end a mouse problem.

If a product claims to repel mice without trapping or sealing, the evidence is against it. University extension services that have looked at the research on peppermint oil, ultrasonic plug-ins, ammonia, predator urine, and similar “natural” repellents come to the same conclusion: any effect is short-lived, and none of them clear a mouse problem. The detailed case for the two best-marketed options is below, and then the things that do work.
Peppermint oil: short-lived at best
The reasoning is intuitive: mice have a strong sense of smell, peppermint oil is pungent, so saturating the entry points should drive them out. In practice, three things go wrong.
Volatility. Peppermint oil evaporates quickly. Soaked cotton balls lose their odor within days, and the spray residue on a threshold fades even faster. To keep any scent barrier active, you would need to reapply it constantly. House mice are curious and food-driven, and the threshold of smell that stops a mouse on day one is gone by the end of the week.
Habituation. Even when the scent is fresh, mice that live around it stop responding. University extension guidance on rodent repellents in general, not peppermint specifically, notes that rodents “have an initial aversion to some odors and tastes” but “no repellents have been found to solve a [rodent] problem for more than for a very short time.” The same logic is why predator urine (fox, coyote, bobcat) is sold as a mouse repellent: the smell is startling at first, and within days the mouse is walking through it.
Hunger wins. A mouse exploring a kitchen has a much stronger drive to reach the food than to avoid a smell at the door. UC IPM’s guidance on house mice does not endorse peppermint or any other scent repellent as a control method. The same Pest Notes publication leads with exclusion and trapping.
The honest summary, drawn from the University of Missouri Extension’s rodent control publication, is that no repellent, including peppermint, has been found to hold off a mouse problem for longer than a short window. It is fine as a freshen-the-room measure, not as a strategy.
Ultrasonic plug-ins: the evidence is the same
Ultrasonic devices are sold on a clean idea: emit a sound above human hearing that mice cannot stand, and they leave the room. Cornell University’s New York State IPM program reviewed the published science and reported that “scientific evaluations of ultrasonic devices have found no effect” on rodents (as well as cockroaches and bed bugs). The post lists five references in its Selected Literature section.
There are three reasons the products underperform, even when the sound is being produced as advertised.
Direction and penetration. Ultrasonic sound is highly directional and does not travel through walls, furniture, or even most soft materials. UC IPM states plainly that “ultrasonic sounds … have very limited use in rodent control because they are directional and don’t penetrate behind objects.” A plug-in in the kitchen does nothing to a mouse behind the refrigerator, inside a wall cavity, or in the next room.
Habituation again. Mice and rats that stay in the sound field quickly become accustomed to it, and any initial startle response fades. UC IPM notes that house mice “quickly become accustomed to regularly repeated sounds,” and Missouri Extension reports the same for rodents and sound devices generally. A repellent that startles for the first week and stops working after that is not solving a problem that has been developing for months.
Output may not match claims. Cornell’s review notes that the actual frequency and intensity some devices produce does not match what their packaging claims, and a few emit sound intense enough to exceed OSHA workplace limits. So you may be getting neither the pitch nor the volume the box promises.
UC IPM’s Quick Tips card on house mice summarizes the ultrasonic category with one line: “High frequency electronic devices aren’t effective.” That is consistent across the IPM extension services.
Ammonia, predator urine, and other “natural” options
The same habituation and penetration problems apply to the rest of the natural repellent shelf.
- Ammonia. The smell is harsh enough to be unpleasant to people, too. A mouse in a garage with accessible birdseed or pet food is not going to detour around an ammonia-soaked rag to keep exploring. Any effect is the same short window that peppermint delivers.
- Predator urine (fox, coyote, bobcat). Marketed heavily for gardens and sheds, this is the same logic as peppermint, with a faster habituation curve because the smell is identifiable and the mouse quickly learns it has never actually been attacked.
- Dryer sheets. The Internet remedy is to stuff them in gaps. There is no extension-service support for this; in the field mice chew them up and use the soft fiber as nesting material.
- Mothballs. Not just ineffective, illegal for this use. Mothballs are a pesticide (naphthalene) labeled for killing clothes moths inside a tightly closed container like a chest, trunk, or garment bag. As the National Pesticide Information Center puts it, using mothballs in a way not specified by the label “is not only illegal, but can harm people,” and scattering them in an attic, a crawlspace, a yard, or a car to repel rodents is exactly that off-label use. The EPA separately warns that illegal mothball products are hazardous to young children, who can mistake them for candy.
The pattern across all four: a mouse problem is a structural problem, and no scent or sound fixes a structural problem.
Why “repel” is the wrong frame
Notice what every working rodenticide does. The National Pesticide Information Center’s rodenticide fact sheet describes baits as products that “are made to attract animals.” Mouse baits and rat baits work because attraction pulls a mouse to a specific spot. There is no parallel class of products built on repulsion, because repulsion does not work at the scale of a building. Mice live in the structure, the structure is full of food and shelter cues stronger than any repellent, and a single opening that is not sealed is an open door regardless of what you put on the other side.
That is also why mouse control advice from UC IPM, Missouri Extension, and EPA does not lead with repellents. It leads with the two things that do not depend on changing mouse behavior.
What actually works
The combination extension services keep coming back to is straightforward, and not what most people want to hear.
Exclusion. A mouse fits through a gap about the size of a dime. Walk the exterior in daylight, look at foundation seams, pipe and wire penetrations, garage door corners, gaps under doors, and vents. Pack any small hole with steel wool or copper mesh, then seal over it with caulk or cement. Expanding foam alone is gnawed through. Sanitation. Cut off food and water. Airtight containers, no pet food out overnight, fix drips. UC IPM specifically recommends feeding pets only what they will eat at one sitting.
Traps. For the mice already inside, snap traps are what extension services recommend. A spread of no-touch snap traps covers a typical problem; a multi-catch box handles a larger one. Indoor poison. Skip it unless you have read the trade-off. Rodenticide baits can work, but mice often die inside a wall, and a closed-cavity carcass can produce weeks of odor with no practical way to retrieve it. If a pro places tamper-resistant bait stations where children and pets cannot reach them, that is a reasonable approach. The EPA’s rodent pages list the conditions for that approach.
The bottom line
Spend the money on steel wool, caulk, and snap traps, not on plug-ins or essential oil. The research from Cornell, UC IPM, and Missouri Extension converges on the same answer: repellents do not solve a mouse problem, and the only durable fix is sealing the structure and removing what is attracting the mice in the first place.
