How to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants nest in damp wood, not in sound wood. Find the moisture source, track foragers at night to the nest, treat it directly, and know when to call a pro.

The short answer

Carpenter ants do not eat wood the way termites do. They excavate damp or rotten wood to nest inside it, push the debris out, and forage from there for food and water. Find the nest, fix the moisture source that let them in, and treat the nest directly. Spraying the trail of foragers you can see in the kitchen wastes your time. The colony and the queen are somewhere in the wall, the attic, or a tree limb against the house, and they keep producing replacements.

Penn State Extension puts it plainly: the parent and satellite nests both “must be destroyed, or the ants will reappear in a few days or weeks.” UC IPM makes the same point in different words: a bait has to be slow-acting so the workers carry the toxicant back and share it with the colony, which is why aiming at the trail alone does not end the problem. The job is to find the nest, not the trail.

Confirm what you are seeing

A handful of traits separate carpenter ants from termites and from the small household ants covered in our ant guide.

  • Size. Carpenter ants are among the largest ants in North America. Penn State and UC IPM both put workers at 1/4 to 1/2 inch long, with winged reproductives up to about 3/4 inch.
  • Color. Penn State describes workers as “wingless, dark, shiny brown to black.” UC IPM notes the western species C. modoc is “uniformly black with dark red legs” and C. vicinus “usually is red and black.”
  • Body shape. The thorax is evenly rounded, and there is a single node between the thorax and the abdomen. The antennae are elbowed. Front wings on a reproductive are longer than the hind wings.
  • Behavior. They are most active after sunset. Penn State suggests watching them with a flashlight between 10:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. from May through July, when foraging is heaviest.

If the insect you found has straight antennae, a body that is not pinched at the waist, and wings of equal length, you are looking at a termite, and our termite guide is the right read instead.

The moisture link is the whole story

Carpenter ants “seldom tunnel into dry, sound wood.” Penn State is explicit: they target wood with a moisture content above about 15 percent, and indoor nest sites are usually tied to a leak, a ventilation problem, or wood in contact with soil. Penn State lists the indoor hot spots: porch pillars, sills, girders, joists, wall studs, window and door casings, and under insulation between ceiling and wall studs. UC IPM adds wall voids, hollow doors, and insulation.

Indoor nests are almost always satellite colonies. The parent colony is usually outside, in a tree hole, stump, log, dead tree, planter box, or woodpile within about 100 yards of the house. Workers travel back and forth. Penn State: “Workers travel between the satellite and parent colonies.” A satellite nest does not contain the queen, so killing it without finding the parent means the satellite is rebuilt in a few weeks.

This is why moisture control and exclusion matter as much as the pesticide. Fix the leak, replace the wet insulation, pull the woodpile off the ground and away from the foundation, trim tree limbs back at least 12 inches from the structure, and the structure is far less inviting next spring.

Signs that point to a nest, not a stray ant

A few clues shift the problem from “ants wandering in” to “ants nesting here.”

  • Coarse, fibrous sawdust with insect body parts. Penn State calls these “piles of coarse, stringy wood particles, dead insect parts, and other debris” near cracks, moldings, basement, attic, or porches. UC IPM describes carpenter ant sawdust as fibrous, versus the “6-sided shaped pellets” that drywood termites push out of their galleries. If you see pellets that look like sand under a kickout hole, you have drywood termites, not carpenter ants.
  • Rustling in walls, floors, or woodwork. All three extensions mention this. A stethoscope or a quiet house at night helps. NC State notes that galleries can run a long way inside the wood.
  • Winged reproductives indoors. Penn State flags numerous winged reproductives at inside windows as evidence they came from an indoor nest. One stray swarmer at a window is not, by itself, conclusive. A dozen is.
  • Foragers in trails at night. Trails can extend up to 300 feet from the nest, per NC State. A flashlight and patience can follow them back to where they disappear into a wall void, a soffit, or a porch post.

Finding the nest

Treat the trail, not the kitchen. The job is to follow the ants backward.

  • Watch at night. Penn State’s recommended window is 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Use a flashlight to spot foragers in the basement, attic, garage, along the foundation, and around porch supports.
  • Use a nontoxic bait to draw them out. UC IPM suggests setting out small amounts of a nontoxic food, either sugar milk (equal parts sugar and milk) or diced crickets or mealworms, near where you have seen activity. Replace what they take and use it to follow them back to the gap they emerge from.
  • Probe suspect wood. Penn State and NC State describe smooth, sandpapered galleries that follow the grain of the wood. Soft spots that give under a screwdriver, or wood that sounds hollow when tapped, are worth opening carefully. If you do not want to open a wall yourself, this is the step to hand off to a pro.
  • Check the obvious outside. Stumps, landscape timbers, fence rails touching the house, firewood stacked against the siding, and tree limbs brushing the roof are the usual outdoor parent sites.

Once you know where the nest is, you can treat it directly.

Treatment that actually reaches the colony

Three options, used in combination, are what the extensions recommend.

Direct nest treatment. If the nest is in an accessible void (a hollow porch post, a cabinet back, a door frame), a licensed pest professional can drill small holes and inject a labeled dust or liquid. Penn State lists diatomaceous earth, silica aerogel, and boric acid as dusts blown into nests and cavities; UC IPM lists dusts of disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (borate) and desiccants. UC IPM also names pyrethroid sprays “such as permethrin or cyfluthrin” as effective control products. For the homeowner, this is generally a pro step: the goal is to reach the galleries, not the surface.

Bait, used correctly. Toxic baits must be slow-acting so workers carry the toxicant back to the nest and share it. NC State lists products with hydramethylnon, avermectin, or boric acid, and says they may require 7 to 10 days before ant activity declines significantly. UC IPM warns that carpenter ants are “finicky,” so offering more than one bait type helps. And do not spray near where the bait goes. NC State: “do not spray pesticides in areas where you will place the bait; otherwise, the ants will avoid and not pick up the bait.”

Perimeter treatment by a licensed applicator. UC IPM describes perimeter sprays with fipronil as “very effective,” and notes these products are restricted-use, applied only by licensed applicators. Penn State describes a similar outside perimeter treatment that is not repellent to the ants. Both fit a strategy aimed at the parent colony outdoors as well as the satellite indoors.

For the satellite inside, the combination that matches the guidance is direct nest treatment where accessible, slow-acting bait where not, plus the moisture and exclusion work that closes the next invitation.

What NOT to do

  • Do not spray the forager trail indoors. Killing the foragers you can see does not reach the queen or the brood in the wall or the tree. UC IPM’s point is that the toxicant has to be a slow-acting bait the workers carry home, not a contact spray on the trail. You move the trail, you do not end it.
  • Do not replace rotted wood and stop there. If the parent colony in the tree outside is still active, the new wood is just fresh real estate. Treat the colony, then repair.
  • Do not trust a fogger or a “carpenter ant spray” sold as a one-shot fix. The colony is in the wall or in the tree, not in the kitchen air.
  • Do not ignore the moisture source. Killing the colony without fixing the leak is renting, not buying, a fix. Next season the same wall is damp and the same ants (or new ones) move back in.

Moisture and exclusion are the prevention

After the colony is gone, the work that keeps it gone is structural.

  • Fix plumbing leaks, roof leaks, gutter overflows, and bad flashing. NC State puts checking for moist, soft, or rotting structural wood first on its prevention list, and stresses that a carpenter ant problem is usually a moisture problem.
  • Improve ventilation in crawlspaces and attics. Add a vapor barrier in damp crawlspaces.
  • Replace moisture-damaged wood with pressure-treated lumber where it contacts masonry or soil.
  • Store firewood off the ground and several feet from the house, per UC IPM.
  • Trim tree limbs and shrubs so they do not touch the structure. NC State suggests at least 12 inches of clearance.
  • Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches deep and pulled back from the foundation, per UC IPM.
  • Seal cracks, gaps, and utility-line entry points where ants use the structure as a highway.

When to call a pro

A licensed pest professional is the right call when:

  • You have found an indoor satellite nest and the parent colony is outside your reach (in a tall tree, a wall void, an attic).
  • Bait and direct treatment have run for 2 to 3 weeks without a clear decline.
  • You see winged reproductives indoors in numbers, which Penn State flags as evidence of an indoor nest.
  • The damaged wood is structural, in a wall, or in a place you cannot safely access.
  • You cannot locate the nest yourself and do not want to open finishes to look.

Penn State notes that satellite colonies often cannot be eliminated without the materials and access a licensed pest management company brings. NC State says these treatments are complex and can be too difficult for the average person to carry out safely, and recommends contacting a professional. The pro’s value here is mostly access and accuracy: identifying the parent versus the satellite, treating the right nest, and tying the work to the moisture fix that prevents it from coming back.

A note on bites

Carpenter ants cannot sting, but UC IPM notes they can inflict painful bites with their jaws and spray formic acid into the wound, causing a burning sensation. Worth knowing if you are reaching into a wall void or a planter box to look for a nest. Gloves and sleeves are not paranoia here.
