How to Get Rid of Mice in Walls
Find where mice leave the wall, set snap traps on their travel routes, seal exterior gaps, and avoid the hidden-carcass problem with poison.

The short answer
Set snap traps where the mice leave the wall and travel through accessible rooms, attics, basements, or crawl spaces. Put each trap perpendicular to the wall with the trigger end against it. Use several traps across the active area, not one trap beside the spot where you hear scratching. At the same time, find and seal the exterior gaps that let mice into the structure.
Skip indoor poison if you want control over where the mouse dies. UC IPM notes that rodenticides often leave dead mice inside the structure. If that happens in a closed wall, you may get an odor without any practical way to retrieve the carcass. A snap trap lets you remove the mouse instead.
Confirm where the mice are traveling
Scratching in a wall tells you that something is moving in the cavity. It does not tell you where the animal enters the house or where it comes out to feed. Look for the physical route before placing traps or opening drywall.
UC IPM recommends looking for droppings, fresh gnaw marks, tracks, and nests made from shredded paper or other fibrous material. The EPA also lists chewed food packaging, holes through walls or floors, nesting material, and stale smells from hidden areas as signs of rodents.
Inspect the accessible spaces beside the noisy wall:
- Kitchen and utility areas: Check behind appliances, under sinks, inside the backs of cabinets, and around pipe penetrations.
- Attic, basement, and crawl space edges: Follow the wall above or below the room where you hear activity. Look behind stored items and along the foundation.
- Garage and storage areas: Check along wall edges, behind boxes, and near food, seed, or pet supplies.
Concentrate traps where signs repeat. UC IPM says house mice seldom travel more than 30 feet from nest and food, so there is no reason to scatter traps in every room. Determine whether the activity connects to an accessible attic, basement, cabinet void, or utility opening before considering drywall work.
Find the entry point outside
An interior gap may be only one stop on the route. A mouse can enter at the foundation, climb inside a wall, and emerge around a pipe or cabinet. Sealing only the interior hole leaves the exterior opening available.
Mice can use very small gaps. UC IPM says they can enter openings as small as 1/4 inch. Walk the exterior in daylight and inspect:
- cracks and gaps where the foundation meets the structure
- openings around pipes, cables, conduit, and other utilities
- gaps under exterior and garage doors
- damaged screens, vents, and gnawed building materials
- vegetation touching or climbing the building, which gives mice cover and a climbing route
Pack a small opening with coarse steel wool, then finish it with a durable patch suited to the surface. The EPA recommends steel wool for small holes. Missouri Extension describes tightly packed steel wool as a temporary plug and names metal or concrete for a lasting repair. For larger damage, use metal, hardware cloth, concrete, or another non-gnawable building material.
Do not rely on expanding foam, plastic screening, rubber, vinyl, or wood alone. UC IPM lists these as ineffective plugs because mice can gnaw them. Foam can close air gaps around a metal barrier, but it should not be the barrier.
Trap and exclude as one job. Seal the building-envelope openings that admit new mice while trapping the animals already inside. Then close interior gaps after activity has stopped. Our mouse exclusion guide covers the building materials and inspection points in more detail.
Set snap traps at the wall exits
Put traps on accessible travel routes, not deep inside a cavity where you cannot check or retrieve them.
Use a mouse-size snap trap with a broad trigger plate. UC IPM reports higher catch rates with wide trigger plates and recommends a trigger that springs easily. Add a small amount of food the mice already eat. Peanut butter is a common option, but too much bait can be removed without firing the trap.
Place each trap perpendicular to the baseboard, trigger end touching the wall. Kentucky Extension explains that mice travel beside walls and edges, so this orientation puts the trigger directly in their path. Put traps behind objects and in secluded areas where you found droppings or gnawing.
In active areas, UC IPM recommends spacing traps no more than about 10 feet apart. If mice appear to jump over a trap, it suggests placing pairs 1 to 2 inches apart. These are targeted placements, not a reason to cover the whole house with traps.
Keep every trap where children and pets cannot reach it, as the EPA directs. Check traps daily, wear gloves to remove captured mice, and bag carcasses for disposal, as Kentucky Extension advises. If a trap stays untouched while fresh signs appear elsewhere, move it to the active route.
Continue until the noises stop and you find no fresh droppings, gnawing, or disturbed bait. Then leave a few traps in protected monitoring locations while you confirm that the exterior repairs are holding.
The dead-mouse-smell reality
Poison does not make a mouse leave the house to die. UC IPM specifically warns that rodenticide use often results in mice dying inside the structure and says trapping avoids the dead-mouse odors that can follow indoor poisoning.
If a poisoned mouse dies in a closed wall, you cannot choose its location or promise when the odor will disappear. There is no honest fixed timeline. Access, airflow, and cavity conditions affect what you notice.
If the carcass is accessible, wear gloves, bag it, and dispose of it. Otherwise, do not cut random holes. Trace the odor from accessible spaces and decide whether a localized opening is justified. A pest professional may be able to narrow the location, but waiting for the odor to fade can be less disruptive than opening a finished wall without a reliable target.
If you choose a rodenticide despite that drawback, do not scatter loose bait into a wall. The EPA says household poison bait should be used in tamper-resistant bait stations, placed where children and pets cannot reach it, with every label direction followed. Indoor poison trades a visible mouse problem for a possible hidden-carcass problem. Make that trade knowingly.
The mistake most people make
They treat the noise instead of the route. A trap beside the loudest patch of drywall may be nowhere near the opening the mouse uses. Poison tossed into the cavity may kill the mouse where it cannot be removed. Foam over one baseboard gap may simply move the activity to another opening.
Follow the evidence instead: fresh sign to accessible travel route, travel route to trap, and exterior gap to durable repair. That sequence removes the current mice and stops replacements.
Prevention after trapping
Sealing does most of the long-term work, but food and shelter still determine whether mice keep testing the house.
- Store food and pet supplies in closed containers.
- Feed pets only what they will eat at one feeding, a step recommended by UC IPM.
- Keep garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids.
- Remove leaf piles, deep mulch, and other nesting cover near the structure, as the EPA recommends.
- Thin plants that touch or climb the building.
- Recheck repaired utility gaps, door bottoms, and foundation seams for fresh gnawing.
Sanitation alone rarely clears an established mouse problem. It supports trapping and exclusion by making the house less rewarding after you close the route.
When to call a pro
Call a licensed pest professional if fresh signs continue after you have trapped the active routes and sealed the accessible exterior gaps, if the likely entry point is at a height or utility penetration you cannot work around safely, or if traps cannot be placed where children and pets cannot reach them.
A professional is also reasonable when the odor strongly suggests an inaccessible carcass but you cannot narrow the location, or when activity spans several walls and floors with no clear route. Ask for an inspection, exclusion plan, and trapping strategy. If rodenticide is proposed indoors, ask where mice are likely to die and how a carcass complaint would be handled before agreeing to it.
