How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in Your Yard

Remove standing water first, use a labeled larvicide where water must stay, and learn which repellents and yard products are worth your time.

The short answer

Empty standing water before you buy a yard spray. Check the whole yard at least once a week, dump what you can, and keep swimming pools treated and circulating. For water that must remain, use a mosquito larvicide labeled for that exact setting. Products with Bti or an insect growth regulator such as methoprene target the immature mosquitoes in the water before they become biting adults.

Repellents solve a different problem. An EPA-registered skin repellent, a patio fan, or some registered spatial repellents can reduce bites while you are outside. They do not remove the breeding sites. Bug zappers, ultrasonic devices, and a pot of so-called mosquito-repellent plants do not clear a yard.

Start with a standing-water check

Mosquito control starts at the larval stage because water is required for part of the life cycle. The container does not have to look like a pond. UC IPM notes that a flowerpot saucer, discarded can, jar, or tree hole can provide habitat.

Walk the yard and look for anything that catches rain or irrigation water:

  • Empty buckets, toys, tarps, unused pots, plant saucers, and other movable containers. Store them covered or upside down.
  • Change the water in birdbaths and pet dishes at least once a week.
  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts so water can drain.
  • Screen rain-barrel openings, keep filters clean, and check the barrel for cracks or leaks.
  • Drain water sitting on a pool cover. Keep an operating pool treated and circulating.
  • Correct low spots that repeatedly hold temporary pools of water where practical.

Do the check again after rain. Dumping a container is better than treating it because there is no pesticide to handle and no water left for the next group of larvae. Ask neighbors to check their yards too. An adult mosquito that develops nearby can still enter your property.

Use larvicide where the water has to stay

A rain barrel, ornamental pond, drainage feature, or other permanent water source may not be practical to empty. That is where a larvicide can make sense. Read the label before buying so you know the product is approved for the type of water you plan to treat.

Two common larvicide types work differently:

  • Bti is a bacterium used to kill mosquito larvae. It is sold in several formulations for standing water. It works on larvae, not pupae, so it is not a substitute for regular inspection.
  • Methoprene is an insect growth regulator. It interferes with development so immature mosquitoes do not emerge as adults.

The EPA also lists other larvicide categories, but that is not a reason to improvise. Use only the amount, placement, and retreatment schedule on the product label. Do not assume a product labeled for one water source belongs in another. If the water connects to a natural waterway, serves animals, or is part of a shared drainage system, ask your local extension office or mosquito-control district what is appropriate.

Larvicide is the backup for water you cannot remove. Scattering it around the yard without finding the wet sites misses the point.

What repels mosquitoes, and what does not

A repellent protects a person or a small occupied area. It does not necessarily reduce the number of mosquitoes breeding nearby.

For exposed skin, the CDC lists EPA-registered products containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, PMD, or 2-undecanone. Choose by the label and the time you expect to be outside. Apply repellent after sunscreen. Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on children younger than 3 years old. Permethrin is for treating clothing and gear, not for direct application to skin.

For a porch or patio, moving air from a fan can reduce bites. The American Mosquito Control Association notes that mosquitoes are relatively weak fliers, so a large fan can be a low-tech option. Some spatial repellents, including certain candles, coils, or diffusers, may help within a limited area. UC IPM notes that citronella candles and coils work best when there is little air movement. That also explains the limitation: they offer temporary help near the product, not yard control. Check for EPA registration and follow the label rather than assuming every scented product has been tested.

Skip these common dead ends:

  • Ultrasonic repellers. UC IPM classifies them as ineffective. The American Mosquito Control Association says at least 10 studies over the past 15 years found these devices have no repellency value.
  • Bug zappers. They kill many non-target insects and do not address the water where mosquitoes develop. UC IPM calls them counterproductive because some of the insects killed prey on mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito-repellent plants. An aromatic plant sitting beside the patio does not create a protective zone. A registered skin product made with a plant-derived active ingredient is a different product with directions for use.
  • Yellow bug lights. EPA is explicit that yellow outdoor lights are not repellents. They may attract fewer mosquitoes than some other lights, but they do not push mosquitoes out of the yard.
  • A single mosquito trap. A trap can catch mosquitoes, but UC IPM warns that one unit may capture only a small share of the insects it attracts. It should not replace source reduction.

What yard sprays can and cannot do

An adult mosquito spray can provide short-term relief, but it does not kill the eggs and larvae waiting in water. NPIC notes that mosquitoes entering the yard a few days after treatment may be unaffected. That makes a spray a possible finishing step for a specific outdoor use, not the foundation of control.

If you use a residential product, follow its label and prevent drift. Keep it away from places the label excludes. More is not better. Broad outdoor spraying can expose beneficial insects and does nothing to fix a clogged gutter or water-filled container.

Be especially skeptical of automatic misting systems. EPA says these systems have not been studied enough to document their effectiveness, and the pesticides they release may affect fish, pollinators, and other non-target species. A timer that repeatedly sprays the yard is not a substitute for inspecting it.

The mistake most people make

The usual mistake is treating the mosquitoes you can see while leaving the nursery untouched. A barrier spray, citronella candle, or trap may change what happens on the patio for a while. None drains a birdbath, screens a rain barrel, or clears a gutter.

Reverse the order. Remove breeding water first. Treat only the water that must remain. Then use personal or small-area bite protection when you are outdoors. This approach requires more inspection than buying a gadget, but it targets the stage you can control most directly.

When to call mosquito control or a pro

Contact your local mosquito-control district or health department when standing water is on public land, in stormwater infrastructure, or on property you cannot access. Call as well when local officials have issued a mosquito-borne disease warning. Public programs use surveillance to decide whether larval or adult control is warranted across a larger area.

Consider a licensed pest professional if you have completed the water check, managed permanent water, and still need temporary adult control around a heavily used outdoor area. Ask where the treatment will go, what it targets, how it affects non-target insects, and what must be kept out of the treated area. A useful service should fit into source reduction and monitoring, not replace them with routine spraying.
