How to Get Rid of Silverfish (Moisture Control Is the Real Fix)
Silverfish need high humidity to thrive. Dry out the basement, bath, and closets, seal their entry points, and use targeted desiccants or residual sprays where activity persists.

The short answer
A silverfish problem is a moisture problem first. Penn State Extension and UC IPM both place dehumidification and fixing water sources ahead of any pesticide. Drop the relative humidity in the basement, bathroom, laundry room, and any damp closet below the level silverfish need, seal the gaps they use to move around, store paper and food in sealed containers, and reserve sprays or desiccants for the spots where activity persists after the environment is hostile to them.
Spraying the bug you see feels productive and is not. UC IPM is direct that insecticides will not work unless you also remove the moisture, food, and hiding places these pests need, and the same page does not recommend foggers or bug bombs. They fail here for the reason they fail against cockroaches - the insect is hiding in a crevice the mist never reaches.
Identify what you are seeing
Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are flat, wingless insects shaped like a tapered carrot. Penn State describes them as silvery-metallic and up to about half an inch long (12 mm), with long antennae and three tail-like appendages at the rear. They move fast and disappear into the nearest crack when you turn on a light.
The closely related firebrat (Thermobia domestica) looks similar but is mottled brown rather than silver and prefers heat. Penn State puts firebrats near furnaces, hot water pipes, and attics, at temperatures over 90 degrees F. If you are seeing the bug in a cool basement, it is almost certainly a silverfish, not a firebrat, and the management advice below applies.
Both species leave the same clue when you find damaged paper or fabric: a faint dusting of tiny scales around or beneath the item. UC IPM notes these scales are slightly incandescent and show up when you brush the area.
Why silverfish keep coming back
Silverfish are not a one-and-done pest. Three facts about their biology explain why.
- They need high humidity. UC IPM puts silverfish activity in the 71 to 90 degrees F range and notes that at the warmer end the relative humidity must be above 75 percent. The damp, cool rooms that hit those conditions - basements, laundry rooms, bathrooms, closets, and storage areas - are where you find them. If a room stays above 75 percent relative humidity, it is a silverfish room.
- They live a long time and lay a lot of eggs. Penn State gives silverfish a lifespan of two to three years, and UC IPM puts the average clutch at around 50 eggs. Penn State says adults can last weeks with no food and no water, and more than 300 days when water is available - which is why a damp but empty closet still has them.
- They eat the things you store, not just crumbs. NPIC lists their diet as flour, cereals, dust, dead insects, fungi, cotton, linen, silk, wallpaper, and the glue in book bindings and cardboard. UC IPM notes their mandibles are too weak to bite, so they scrape the surface of paper rather than chew it, leaving irregular etched holes.
This is why moisture control is the real fix. Killing the adults with a spray does not change the fact that the basement is the right humidity for the next generation.
The four-part fix that actually works
Penn State’s bristletail guide and UC IPM both recommend combining the steps below. Doing one without the others usually leaves enough silverfish behind to restart the population.
1. Dry the space out. Run a dehumidifier in the basement or other damp room and aim for relative humidity below 50 percent if you can. Use bathroom and laundry-room exhaust fans during and after showers or drying cycles. Repair any plumbing drip, sweating pipe, or foundation seep. NPIC’s silverfish page also lists insulating cold pipes that collect condensation.
2. Cut their food and shelter. Vacuum the basement floor, along baseboards, under storage shelves, and around plumbing penetrations. Move cardboard boxes, old newspapers, magazines, and stacked paper off the floor and out of damp corners. Store cereals, flour, pasta, and pet food in airtight containers. NPIC notes that storing books and papers in airtight plastic bins removes a food source and a harborage at the same time.
3. Seal the cracks they use. Caulk or seal gaps under baseboards, around window and door trim, and where pipes and conduits pass through walls. Penn State lists caulking, spackle, and expandable foam as the materials to use. This step also closes routes between rooms, so a treatment in the basement is not undone by silverfish walking in from the crawlspace.
4. Treat the spots that stay active. Once the environment is hostile, what is left is usually a smaller, more localized population. For those, Penn State and UC IPM recommend desiccants and residual sprays used as crack-and-crevice treatments, not as broadcast applications.
- Sticky monitoring traps (the same ones sold for cockroaches) placed along walls and in corners help confirm where activity is concentrated. UC IPM also describes a low-tech option: a smooth glass jar with masking tape wrapped around the outside. The silverfish climb up the tape and fall in, but cannot climb out of the slick glass.
- Desiccant dusts such as diatomaceous earth or silica aerogel can be puffed into wall voids, behind baseboards, and into the gaps around pipes. Penn State notes these products stay effective only while they remain dry. A damp basement will clump the dust and defeat it.
- Residual sprays containing synthetic pyrethroids (deltamethrin, cyfluthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin) applied into cracks and crevices are the labeled chemical option Penn State lists. Treat the crack, not the open surface, and always follow the label.
What does not work
A few common moves look reasonable and accomplish little.
- Bug bombs and total release foggers. UC IPM does not recommend foggers for silverfish and firebrats. The mist settles on exposed surfaces and does not reach the narrow crevices where silverfish harbor, the same reason foggers fail against cockroaches.
- Bait stations. UC IPM is blunt that baits are generally unsuccessful because silverfish tend not to feed on them. You will see the bait untouched for months.
- Spraying the silverfish you can see. A contact spray kills the one on the bathroom floor. It does not address the population behind the baseboard, the moisture feeding them, or the cardboard box they are eating.
- Outdoor perimeter spraying. Silverfish are an indoor moisture pest. A perimeter spray treats a problem that is not the reason you have them.
Are silverfish dangerous?
Silverfish do not bite, sting, or spread disease. The damage is to paper, fabric, glue, and stored food rather than to people - UC IPM frames the harm as the ruined book, the flaking wallpaper, and the pantry items they have walked through.
That said, an unexplained skin irritation is not a silverfish bite. UC IPM notes their mandibles are too weak to bite - they can only scrape the surface of paper - so they are not the cause of marks on skin. If you have both silverfish and unexplained skin marks, look for another cause, and a doctor or your local Cooperative Extension office can help sort it out.
When to call a pro
Most silverfish problems can be handled by a homeowner who is willing to run a dehumidifier for a few weeks, fix a plumbing drip, and do some sealing. A licensed pest professional is the better choice when:
- Silverfish are active on upper floors of a dry home. That usually means a larger population in the wall voids or a moisture source you have not located, often a roof leak, a plumbing leak behind drywall, or a chronically damp crawlspace.
- You have a finished basement that you cannot dry out without opening walls or running a permanent dehumidification system.
- Activity has not dropped noticeably within a few weeks of moisture control, sanitation, and crack-and-crevice treatment. If it has not, untreated harborages or a moisture source you have not found are the usual reason.
A good service call identifies the moisture source first and treats the cracks after. If the proposal is a broadcast interior spray without addressing humidity, that is the wrong plan.
Keep them out
After the population is down, the ongoing work is keeping the conditions that brought them in from coming back.
- Keep the basement or crawlspace below 50 percent relative humidity with a dehumidifier, and run a drain line so it does not shut off from a full tank.
- Run bath and laundry fans long enough to actually clear the humidity, not just a minute or two.
- Store books, papers, and fabric in airtight plastic bins if they sit in a basement, garage, or attic, and keep stored cardboard off the floor - it is food and shelter at once.
- Re-caulk around pipes and baseboards as it fails; a small gap is enough.
Silverfish are a keep-the-environment-hostile problem rather than a one-time fix. Drop the humidity, cut the food, close the gaps, and a sticky trap or two will tell you whether the work held.
