Natural Pest Control: What Actually Works and What Is a Myth
Peppermint oil, ultrasonic plugs, mothballs in the yard, dryer sheets - none of it works the way the label says. Here is what EPA, university extension, and FTC actually back.

The short answer
The phrase “natural pest control” covers two very different things, and you need to tell them apart. The first is the set of non-chemical methods that have always been the backbone of working pest control: sealing gaps, cutting off food and water, trapping, vacuuming, hand removal. The EPA puts these at the top of its prevention guidance and they are the things that actually clear an infestation. The second is a bucket of repellent gimmicks - peppermint oil, ultrasonic plug-ins, dryer sheets, mothballs scattered in the garden - that sound natural, sell well, and do not move the needle on a real pest problem. University extension programs and the FTC say so in plain language.
If you want fewer pests, do more of the first and stop buying the second.
What “natural” usually means, and why the label is slippery
“Natural” is not a regulated pesticide term. Under federal law, a product can call itself natural and still contain active ingredients that EPA treats as pesticides. The National Pesticide Information Center lists the active ingredients EPA allows in “minimum risk” (sometimes called “25(b)”) products, and most of them are familiar plant oils: cedar oil, citronella, lemongrass oil, mint oil, thyme, garlic oil. NPIC’s caution still applies: “No matter how natural, all pesticides should be used with care.” A cedar-oil spray is a pesticide, even if the bottle has a leaf on the label. Plant oils can irritate skin and eyes, and the exemption from federal registration is not an exemption from working.
The “natural” methods that actually control pests are mostly not products at all. They are physical and behavioral changes to the building, the food supply, and the moisture. The rest of this piece sorts them.
What actually works: the non-chemical toolkit
The EPA describes three non-chemical approaches to controlling pests: starving them out, drying them out, and keeping them out. Everything in the working toolkit fits one of those buckets.
Cut off food and water. EPA’s rodent guidance tells you to keep kitchen garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids, remove nesting sites like leaf piles and deep mulch, and turn the compost pile so newly added food scraps stay covered. During an active infestation, stop feeding outdoor birds or switch to huskless seed that leaves less residue for rodents. The same starve-them-out, dry-them-out logic EPA applies to roaches and rodents governs silverfish and most stored-product pests: seal the food, clean up promptly, and deny them water.
Seal the entry points. Cornell University’s IPM program runs through the materials and gaps in detail: galvanized hardware cloth with quarter-inch mesh for smaller animals like mice and bats (half-inch is stronger but less flexible), galvanized sheet metal screwed down to resist raccoons and other animals that pull or gnaw at patches, copper gauze to seal cracks and small openings, and stainless steel mesh where you want a material that is stronger than galvanized and will not rust. EPA’s rodent guidance is blunter: seal holes inside and outside the home, and the fix can be as simple as plugging small holes with steel wool. Expanding foam alone is not a fix - a mouse gnaws through it. The foam is the cap over the steel wool, not the plug.
Trap, don’t just repel. EPA’s rodent guidance and the University of California’s IPM program both put snap traps or sticky traps at the center of mouse and rat control. Traps tell you where the activity is and remove the animals. Repellents, even working ones, do not.
Hand-removal and physical exclusion for spiders and occasional invaders. UC IPM’s spider Pest Note is explicit: insecticides “will not provide long-term control and should not generally be used against spiders outdoors.” The page’s actual recommendations are seal cracks and screen gaps, sweep and vacuum regularly, knock down webs, declutter storage, and put down sticky traps for the ones you keep finding.
Diatomaceous earth in the right places. UC IPM’s active-ingredient database describes how diatomaceous earth works: it is “made of fossilized aquatic organisms (diatoms) which create amorphous silicon dioxide” and it “causes insects to dry out and die by absorbing moisture and scratching the insect’s exoskeleton.” That mechanism sets its limits. Because it kills by drying insects out and abrading them on contact, DE works only as a thin, dry dust in the cracks, wall voids, and outlet gaps where insects actually crawl. It stops working once it gets wet or clumps, and it does nothing to a pest that never walks through it - which is why a damp outdoor perimeter sprinkle accomplishes little.
Plant oils as contact killers, not residual barriers. UC IPM’s ant Pest Note lists peppermint, rosemary, clove, orange, and thyme as oils “formulated in pesticide-type products to be applied for this purpose.” The same page is direct about the catch: those oils “typically provide excellent contact activity but have limited residual activity.” Translation: a clove-oil spray will kill the ants it wets, and the scent will not protect your kitchen counter the next day.
EPA-registered plant-based skin repellents for mosquitoes and ticks. This is where “natural” is meaningful, because the registration process tested the product. EPA’s skin-applied repellent ingredient list includes oil of lemon eucalyptus, oil of citronella, catnip oil, and p-Menthane-3,8-diol (PMD, the refined active found in oil of lemon eucalyptus) alongside the synthetic options. These are not aromatherapy; they are registered insect repellents with specific protection times printed on the label.
What is a myth: the things that look natural and do not work
Peppermint oil for mice. This is the most common “natural” recommendation on the internet. It is also not in the EPA’s prevention guidance, not in Cornell’s exclusion checklist, not in any of the UC IPM Pest Notes as a method for excluding rodents. Peppermint oil has limited contact activity against insects like ants, and that is a different claim than excluding a mouse from a wall void. If you have mice, the answer is seal the gaps, set the traps, and remove the food - in that order.
Ultrasonic plug-ins and electromagnetic devices. The FTC has a long public record on these. In 2001 the agency sent warning letters to more than 60 manufacturers and retailers of ultrasonic pest-control devices, telling them that efficacy claims must be backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence and that unsupported claims may not comply with the FTC Act’s ban on false and deceptive advertising. It noted that between 1985 and 1997 it had already brought law enforcement actions against six companies over “false and unsubstantiated claims” about ultrasonic devices. In 2002 the FTC charged an Orlando-based company, Lentek International, with making “false and unsubstantiated claims” about its electronic mosquito and pest repellers. Plug-in ultrasonic devices have never produced the scientific evidence the agency asks for.
Mothballs in the garden, the attic, or the yard. Mothballs are a pesticide whose active ingredients (naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene) are registered for use only inside a closed, airtight container, together with the clothing they are meant to protect. The National Pesticide Information Center is direct that using them outdoors to repel snakes and other nuisance wildlife is not an approved use and is illegal, and that using a pesticide in a way the label does not specify can harm people, pets, and the environment. Scattering them under a porch or around the foundation does not reliably repel the moles, snakes, or rodents people hope it will, and it releases a pesticide where it was never meant to go.
Dryer sheets, ammonia, Irish Spring soap, coffee grounds. These come up constantly as “natural” deterrents for everything from deer to roaches. None of them appear in EPA’s prevention guidance, in the UC IPM Pest Notes, or in Cornell’s exclusion checklist, because there is no controlled evidence that they exclude pests at any practical dose. The pattern is the same: somebody tried it once, the pest was not there that day, somebody posted it, and the recommendation has been copied ever since.
Bug bombs and total-release foggers for cockroaches. NC State University’s IPM program tested four commercially available bug bombs in five apartment complexes with moderate to severe German cockroach infestations and found them ineffective. The aerosol settles on exposed horizontal surfaces, while roaches spend almost all of their time on the undersides of surfaces and inside cabinets. UC IPM is blunter: foggers “don’t reach the crevices where cockroaches harbor and breed and can be hazardous.”
The honest framework
The non-chemical methods above are not magic, and on their own they rarely finish a serious infestation. UC IPM and EPA both treat them as part of an integrated pest management approach: identify the pest, monitor with traps, set a threshold, apply the lowest-risk effective method first, and escalate to a targeted chemical if the non-chemical methods do not get the job done. Diatomaceous earth, boric acid dust in wall voids, and gel baits are all part of that ladder. So is calling a licensed pest professional.
When to call a pro
Bring in a licensed pest professional when you are seeing pests in multiple rooms, when daytime activity suggests the population is large, when exclusion work needs to happen at height or around utilities, or when the non-chemical toolkit has run for several weeks without measurable progress. A pro brings access to products and placements a homeowner cannot legally or practically use, and most IPM-focused companies will lead with the same non-chemical steps above before reaching for a sprayer. Ask what they plan to do before they treat, and ask which non-chemical steps they want you to keep doing. The combination is what clears the problem and keeps it cleared.
